What is a modern cloth nappy?

A cloth nappy is a washable, reusable nappy with two essential parts: an absorbent layer to soak up moisture and a water-resistant outer layer to help keep clothing dry.

Some styles have these parts built together. Others use separate inserts and covers. After a change, the nappy is cleaned, washed, dried and used again.

Start small. Find your favourites.

You can try cloth nappies for a few daytime changes at home while continuing to use disposables at other times.

Starting with a small collection lets you practise fitting, try different styles and get comfortable with washing before buying more.

There’s no pressure to switch completely. Build your collection at a pace that suits your family.

Which cloth nappy should I choose?

Pocket nappies
An absorbent insert slides into a pocket inside the nappy. Remove the insert for washing and put it back once everything is dry.

All-in-one nappies
The absorbent layers are attached to the nappy, keeping everything together. Check the product description for any extra boosters needed.

Nappy covers
A separate outer layer worn over an absorbent nappy, such as a flat, prefold or fitted nappy. A cover needs an absorbent layer underneath it.

Newborn nappies
Sized for smaller babies. Check each product’s weight range rather than assuming every adjustable nappy will fit from birth.

How many cloth nappies do I need?

Your starting number depends on:

1. How many changes you plan to use cloth for each day.

2. How often you’ll wash.

3. How long your nappies take to dry.

4. Your baby’s age and changing needs.

For full-time use, you’ll need enough for changes between washes, plus extras while the clean nappies dry. For part-time use, a smaller collection may be enough.

Every baby and family is different. Use our visual guide as a starting point, then adjust your collection as you learn what works.

What else will I need?

Absorbent inserts
Check whether they’re included with your nappies or need to be purchased separately.

A wetbag or suitable laundry storage
Useful for keeping used nappies separate at home and when you’re out.

A washing routine
Follow your nappy manufacturer’s instructions and the detergent directions.

Liners and extra boosters can be useful additions, but you don’t need every accessory before your first change.

Your first cloth nappy change

Wash and prepare your new nappies according to their care instructions. Add the required absorbency, adjust the size and check for a snug, comfortable fit around the legs and waist.

Change promptly when soiled and regularly throughout the day. Remove solid waste into the toilet and follow the storage and washing guidance in our free guide.
